"Sketch of Alexis" - mixed media portrait sketch

mixed media, portrait, figurative, sketch, drawing, woman, quick, loose
This drawing is one of those "catch them while you can" drawings.  Not often enough do I have a live model all to myself! Alexis is a model I've drawn from before, but this time it wasn't in a group setting. For this fun drawing, I used acrylic with touches of oil pastel and charcoal.  The acrylic did 95% of the work in this piece.   It's done on acrylic paper by Strathmore - a really tough support that I love - has a definite pattern to the paper that really works when using acrylic and I even like it for other media (obviously).  The size of the paper was originally 12 x 12" but I cut it down to about 11 x 6" and did something else with the rest of it.  One of the most fun things is using scrap pieces to do something experimental - and sometimes it actually works!  Thanks so much for stopping by!

From an Ancient Torso - original mixed media figurative drawing redux

So great to sketch from these beautiful creations - in this case, using charcoal, graphite and Caran d'Ache neocolor 1 -  on Strathmore 300 mixed media paper which I use as a sketchbook because the paper is tough enough for any dry media but not quite as expensive as the 400 series.  Somehow, I just feel a little bit freer to do things on the less costly paper that I might not otherwise do on more expensive paper.  Ever have that feeling?   I love the 400 series though, and when it's on sale, I stock up!  Thanks for stopping by!

Sketchbook Landscape - original mixed media drawing.

This type of drawing is not really my thing, but was working on my sketchbook, which is the subject of this post.  I was at the craft store in the next town and came across a Bee sketchbook for markers which I snapped up.  I love it so much!  The pages lie completely flat and it has a stiff black pebbled cover - such a delight to work in.  I used pastel pencils, water soluble pencils, marker, and charcoal.  I used Bee papers years ago, then later could never seem to find this brand, but am really glad I have this cute sketchbook.  This product comes in other sizes besides this 8 x 8" and with vellum paper, as well.  Thanks for stopping by!

Portrait Mix - original mixed media portrait drawing

A pretty model and lots of different art supplies is endless fun.  First came the ink, then the Caran d'Ache wax crayon, then the watercolor sticks, next the colored pencil, and a little oil pastel on the tip of her nose.  It really looks pretty much like the model - at least I think so - and she liked it, so time well spent, even if the approach is a little unorthodox.   It's 5 1/2 x 5 1/2" on cold press watercolor paper.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Red, White and Blue Jive - original mixed media figurative drawing

Just a fun drawing using a little of this, a little of that - specifically, ink, watercolor, colored pencil, oil pastel. Quick and a pleasure to do - no looking back. I loved her position, looking back at him, who seems to be in another world.  It's on 6 x 8" mixed media paper.  Thanks for stopping by!

Patti in Black and White with Blue - original ink and acrylic drawing

I guess I have a thing about blue, but have also been thinking about doing some of the action drawings in red, other drawings in green - should be fun.  This drawing was done on 8 x 6" Strathmore Mixed Media paper - good stuff - with an Itoya calligraphy pen.  Thanks so much for looking!
