Drawing of a Young Woman - charcoal portrait drawing

I didn't have my laptop for over a week and was just helpless when it came to posting my art - it's pretty pathetic when one is so dependent on a machine, but there it is.   This 8 x 6" drawing is one I really loved doing - I began it with a tiny charcoal piece held on its side and scribbled as quickly as I could.  And when the shapes were in, I worked on her features, using vine charcoal and a kneaded eraser on mixed media paper.  Thanks for stopping by!

Darling Roger - charcoal sketchbook drawing of my dog

My precious boy - and Able Assistant - is napping and therefore, a good subject.  He's getting old - maybe 14 or 15 - just an estimate since we got him from the pound, which I heartily recommend, but is in fairly good health with a few glitches here and there.  My husband and I spoil him a bit, and he deserves every bit of spoiling he gets!  This drawing is from my sketchbook, about 5 x 8" - maybe I got his spots and ears a little dark, but it still looks like my sweet fellow.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Male Nude - original charcoal drawing

I guess it's obvious that I've been to life drawing groups lately.  This one is from my little sketchbook - about 8 x 5".  Thanks for stopping by!

Akimbo - original charcoal figurative drawing

How I love to draw with charcoal!  And I was lucky to get this pose - it was kind of dark where we were, but still am pleased with the outcome, even though I didn't totally "finish" it.  I just love when I get almost to the bottom of a figurative drawing, just getting really loose and making it more about line.  A bit about charcoal - I used a vine charcoal here, so lovely and soft, but there are other forms of this fabulous medium:  Click here to read a little about it.  This drawing is about 14 x 8".  Thanks for looking!

Sketch for Sunday - Man in Boat - charcoal figurative drawing from life

On Saturdays, I like to get out and do sketches of whatever I can find  - and I found this guy.  I had just a moment to capture him and the essence of the scene, which could end up being a little painting.  With maybe a little more detail, of course.  It was fun and I think sketching from life always helps my drawing immensely.  Thanks for stopping by!

Moment of Truth - original charcoal figurative drawing

Did he see it through?  This drawing was done on Mi-Teintes paper, 12 x 9".  I used a stump along with my charcoal pencils (General's Primo, black and white).  Thanks for stopping by!

Black and White Country Luv - original charcoal figurative drawing

After the rodeo dances here in Junction a couple of weekends ago, I have lots and lots of two stepper drawings and paintings.  Here's one of my faves.  It's about 11 x 8 " - it's actually on 12 x 9" paper, but I've matted it smaller.  This is on Bee Drawing paper and I'm really glad to see this brand around again - bought it at Michael's.  Love the paper, although it's not as forgiving as some others, it's still a pleasure to draw on.  With me, I make so many changes and erasures - I sort of like to mess up the surface a little -  I love paper and love to work it over.  Thanks for looking!

Tiny Spaniel - original charcoal drawing

I love dogs and here is a little drawing - about 8 x 11" - that I did of a King Charles Cavalier spaniel.  One of my boards on Pinterest is about dogs - when you have a minute, please check it out!  Thanks for stopping by!

Thicket - original charcoal landscape drawing

I've been finding lots of enjoyment in drawing thickets.  Doesn't sound too exciting, but the line making is so satisfying.  I'm basically a "drawer", so putting pencil to paper and making marks is what I love best.  I have many more of these, plus I've been working on pen and ink nudes, mapping the shadows and then practicing my hatching.  Will post some of those tomorrow. Drawing is my fave!  This one is on 8 x 10" Strathmore drawing paper.  Thanks for stopping by!😊

On My Easel Sketch of Gemma - original charcoal portrait sketch in progress

Here's a little 12 x 9" sketch of Gemma - not finished, but one that I'm enjoying working on.  It's on Strathmore toned paper, which is fun to draw on, especially when using a little white in addition to the charcoal.  As I progress, I'll use some white - just not there, yet.  Thanks for looking!

Nude on Grey - original charcoal drawing of a nude model

A charcoal drawing on grey paper - actually it's Strathmore 403 - is the latest from Hackberry Street Studio.   This one is about 9 1/2 x 4 1/2".  Thanks for looking!

Black and White Rodeo - original charcoal figurative drawing

I am sometimes astonished by the power and emotion of charcoal drawings.  It's my all-time favorite medium.  This drawing is on Canson drawing paper.  Although the tear line runs through the top of the cowboy's hat, I was so happy with the way it was going, that I just went with it and will simply bond it to museum board.  It's about 7 x 10".  Thanks for stopping by!

Sketch for A Little Waltz - original charcoal figurative drawing

I had models (my wonderful family) over Thanksgiving, and am planning to paint from some of the drawings.  This piece is one that I'm hoping (fingers and toes crossed) to make into a painting that's less detailed than usual.  It's on 12 x 9" mixed media paper, and drawn with vine charcoal.  Thanks for looking!

Joanie - original charcoal portrait drawing

I was going to do this in oil paint, but when I realized I just wouldn't have time, it was charcoal to the rescue.  Could probably do a painting from this drawing, but am happy with the charcoal version.  I used vine charcoal and General's Peel n Sketch (I think I've called it Peel n Draw before) on Strathmore 400 Mixed Media paper.  This paper is really versatile - it's 140 lb. and has just the right amount of tooth, although maybe not as easy to erase as I'd like.  But then I'm pretty hard on paper and work and work it 'til it's worn out, so really, there's no paper for me - I should probably work on my technique!
I kind of dreaded doing the hands, especially when there's not much time, but think they worked out okay.  This drawing is about 11 x 8".  I hope to be able to do a painting of Joanie - maybe we can have her as a model again soon.  One can hope.
Thanks for stopping by!

Jive Scribble - original charcoal figurative drawing

Trying to capture the energy here - will probably end up with a little painting from this one.  I did the drawing on Strathmore 14 x 11" Mixed Media paper - actually more of a sketchbook, I think, and I really like using it.  Also used General's Peel n Sketch charcoal pencil.  Thanks for looking!

Doubting Sarah - original charcoal portrait drawing

She looked as if she didn't believe a word they were saying.  I could get busy and "finish" this piece, but I'm happy with it.  It captures her expression, which was one of amused doubt.  This drawing is about 8 x 6" on mixed media paper.  Thanks for looking!

Sketch for Tango Drama - original charcoal figurative drawing

I love these dramatic moments in tango - tango dancers always dance like they mean it.  And I'm convinced they do! This is drawn on 14 x 11" mixed media paper.  Thanks for stopping by!

Curly - original charcoal portrait drawing

I loved drawing her hair, which is a remarkable feature.  She isn't a regular model, so I didn't have much time - there I go again - anyway, much fun to draw.  This drawing is on mixed media 10 x 8" paper.  Thanks for stopping by!
