"Mavis in Sunlight" - original oil pastel portrait

woman, hat, blue sky, oil pastel, portrait, loose drawing

It's pretty difficult to get anyone - even a friend - to hold a pose in light like it was that day, so that's where lots of time spent drawing fast comes in.  I did this one on 7 x 5" Ampersand Pastelbord (great stuff) using Sennelier oil pastels (more great stuff).  It's loose because I like things kind of raw and of course didn't have much time.  Was so happy with how it turned out, especially the hand.  It's sometimes the little things that can make one happy!😊 Thanks for stopping by!

"Fiddling Around" - original oil pastel figurative drawing

loose, gestural, portrait drawing, oil pastel, colorful
I loved doing this very loose 7 x 5" oil pastel on Pastelbord - maybe because her activity (or lack thereof) is one of my favorites. 😊  This little piece is very raw - I didn't smooth anything and it's very much like the quickly done original pencil drawing I did while watching a girl at a table with her friends.  She was in her own world while the other girls chatted noisily.  I used lipsticky Sennelier oil pastels - what a joy they are to work with!  I guess I spent a teeny bit more time on her face and hair and allowed - particularly her left side - to just sort of 'happen'.  If you spend even a small amount of time on my blog, you know that's my favorite way to work.  Thanks so much for stopping by my studio!

Sketch of Janie - original oil pastel portrait drawing

oil pastel, loose, colorful, expressive, portrait

This loose drawing is one I copied from a more serious piece that I did in a life drawing group.  I was getting ready to send the first one to File 13, but gave it another life here.  I allowed myself maybe 10 minutes and went crazy.  Done on sanded pastel paper with mostly Sennelier and some Caran d'Ache and CrayPas Specialist oil pastels, it's about 7 x 10".  I never stop loving my oil pastels - more artists should try them - whether drawing or painting, they're up for anything!  Thanks for stopping by!

Clara's Hat - original oil pastel portrait

oil pastel, loose, portrait, design, Connie Chadwell

I used a rather casual approach to this little piece which always seems to be my best option. Loose and inexact makes me so happy - not just in what I do but in most all artwork.  Her pose was perfect as a design, I thought, so I kept her over on the side.   My tools were Sennelier oil pastels on 7 x 5" Ampersand Pastelbord.  Much fun.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Woman with a Fan - original oil pastel portrait painting

Woman seated looking to side holding fan

Here's one that I'm trying before painting the same pose in oil.  I'm pretty happy with it. A problem arises though, when I don't get the same feeling in the oil painting that I have in the original drawing - plus no more model.  I think there's just something spontaneous that happens in a drawing group but when I'm back in the studio, it's tough to reconstruct the emotion.  The artist's reaction to the live model is what painting from life is all about, I think (when it's not a commission and must look exactly like your subject).  And even with commissions, there's a bit of the artist's reaction, as well.  Hey, I think I just figured it out - I'm going to stop with this one since I'm happy with it.  See what talking it out can do? 😌  This piece was done on 7 x 5" Pastelbord using mostly Sennelier, with some Caran d'Ache, too.  Thanks so much for stopping by (and listening)!
