Jive Sketch - original charcoal figurative sketch

This sketch is one that I did to include in a painting of jive dancers.  At first, I had his left leg straight, then kind of bent, as it is here.  I was looking for a more dominant position for the guy and either leg position will do.  I was pleased with his presence here and you may have noticed that he is now sporting a jacket.
The drawing is on 6 x 6" Bristol board paper.  Thanks for stopping by!

Lindy Lines - original watermedia figurative drawing

This evening, I drew many pages of dancers in my Borden and Riley pad of paper for pens.  I used Caran d'Ache watercolor crayons, but didn't add water.  The crayons have such a soft, almost gooey feel when they meet the paper and I love them.  I've been painting lots of oil pastel pieces and a few oils - will probably post them soon.  But I love to draw my dancers - they're my absolute favorites.  I love their energy!  Thanks so much for stopping by my blog - stay cool!

They're Really Jivin'! - original charcoal figurative sketch

This drawing is one of those 'draw it and don't look back' things.  Fun and fast - vine charcoal, with some white pastel on grey mat board - the image is about 8 x 8".  I love it when I can hear their feet hit the floor and I did with this one.  Thanks so much for stopping by!

Crazy Jive - original mixed media figurative painting

In this drawing/painting on 12 x 9" Yupo paper, I used everything but the kitchen sink - as they say.  First, a very few graphite lines, then marker; next came Caran d'Ache  Neocolor I (a wonderful wax crayon), then NeoArt crayons, which are richly pigmented water-soluble oil pastels.  I'm just fooling around with different media and maybe I'll find a new love.  I'd love to hear of your experiments with new media - if you'd like to get in touch, just click the "Contact Me" in the right-hand column.

Jivin' All Over Again - original oil figurative painting

Been busy for awhile, but am turning my attention back to art. Here is today's 6 x 6" painting on Gessobord of my jivers. I was listening to a little of Matthew Pearl's The Last Dickens while I did this one - I love his work! Hope you're all having a nice early spring - thanks so much for stopping by! PS. This painting is based on my drawing from a few posts ago, Jivemania Again.

Jivemania Again - original charcoal figurative drawing

I just did a lot of scribbling to come up with this drawing. I sort of let my hand go to see what would happen. The figure on the far right is how these things begin - well, the bottom half of her, anyway. And, as always, I really worked the paper over.
This weekend I saw a small but wonderful drawing show at the McNay in San Antonio. I never tire of looking at drawings and as I've probably said over and over, drawings are - to me - a look into the soul of an artist.
This drawing is vine charcoal on Strathmore Bristol vellum and is about 8 x 12". Thank you for stopping by!

Rockin' to the Beat - original charcoal figurative drawing

It seems like forever since I posted anything, but I've been really, really busy! That should slow down now and at this point, I'm loving to draw my little charcoal dancers. They rock the night (and probably the day) away. I just can't keep an eye on them all the time, so who knows what they get up to!

If you are near the Kerrville, Texas, area, drop in at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center to see our Kerrville Art Club show. It will open on Thursday, with the reception on Saturday. The show will be up for a month. It was judged by Steven DaLuz, a San Antonio based artist, and is really beautiful!

This drawing was done with vine charcoal on 9 x 12" vellum Bristol. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Jive Frenzy - original mixed media figurative painting

More from my busy little couple and their frenzied journey through jive dancing.  I'm having so much fun with the mixed media approach to my dancing paintings and I love sharing it with you!  This ink, wax crayon and oil pastel drawing/painting is on 6 x 6" Bristol board.

Jivemania II - original oil figurative painting by Connie Chadwell

I probably could have made this piece more finished, but I am really a fan of a more "raw" state, so left it where I felt it still had life.  It's easy for me to kill a painting, plus it's much more fun this way.  So, I just shut the studio door and headed home.  The painting is 6 x 6" on Gessobord.  Thanks so much for visiting my blog and
THANK YOU, FOLLOWERS!  I appreciate your continuing interest in my artwork!!!!!!!!!!

More Jumpin' - original mixed media figurative drawing by Connie Chadwell

This little couple just finished a turn - I can't remember now what it's called (time will do that) - and never missed a beat.
These drawing/paintings are so much fun to do - a little ink, some Caran d'Ache Neocolor I, a bit of Caran d'Ache Neoart crayon, a few touches of oil pastel, all on 6 x 6" Bristol board paper - and you're good to go!

Jumpin' - original mixed media figurative drawing by Connie Chadwell

This drawing began with a Prismacolor marker, then moved to Caran d'Ache Neoart Aquarelle, then finished up with oil pastel.  I worked furiously and when it was done, I had about as much color on me as on the drawing.  It's on Strathmore 300 6 x 6" Bristol board.  There's a lot left unsaid here, but I wanted to do it quickly before I got bogged down in too much detail.  Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!  Sold

Friday Jive - original oil figurative painting by Connie Chadwell

Another jive couple - this one on 6 x 6" Pastelbord.  I started this painting with a palette knife,  did about half with that, then worked on it with a brush.  Kinda wild.  Thanks for visiting my blog! Sold

Rockin' - original oil figurative painting by Connie Chadwell

This loosey goosey painting was done from gesture drawings of dancers and I thoroughly enjoyed painting it.  The drawings look kind of like scribbles - I think I've posted some of them before - but I can 'read' them.  You'd probably look at my gesture drawings and ask "Hunh?" and wonder how on earth I came up with the final product.  Gesture drawings are a kind of shorthand that you can build upon right on top of the drawing.  That's not what I did here, but building on top of the gesture is one of my favorite things to do.  Once you have the gesture, you can stop any time and have a finished product.

"Rockin'" is 6 x 6" on Gessobord.  Thanks for stopping by! Sold

JIVIN' - original oil pastel figurative painting by Connie Chadwell

Been working madly for the past few days on "serious" artworks, so here's what I really, really love to do - at least on canvas - another jive painting.  This oil pastel is 12 x 16" on Pastelbord.  The dancers had fun, I had fun - can't beat that.  Thanks for stopping by. Sold

Even More Jive - original oil figurative painting by Connie Chadwell

This painting is based on my earlier charcoal drawing, More Jive.  It's the same size as the drawing, 6 x 12" and is on Masterpiece stretched canvas.  So much fun to paint dancers - they never tire of dancing and I never tire of painting them!  Thanks for visiting Hackberry Street Studio! Sold

More Jitterbugs - original figurative oil painting by Connie Chadwell

I did see some folks carrying on like this recently - just living for the moment - and it was great to watch! The result for my artwork was lots of fun sketches that I may turn into paintings and post later.  This 6 x 6" painting is on Gessobord and is somewhat tamer than some of the other drawings I brought home.  It was so enjoyable to paint these little wild things that I think I actually smiled while I painted.  Thanks so much for stopping by - I always love for you to visit Hackberry Street Studio!  SOLD
