Drama Queen - oil, figurative/portrait

I am back from my short hiatus - tanned and rested. Well, maybe not tanned, but certainly rested. And with lots and lots of material with which to create my people stories.

Plus, I was so lucky to encounter tango enthusiasts fresh from tango tours, cruises actually. They danced as I drew. More of these subjects will be posted in the coming days.

This 5" x 7" oil is on quality gessoed hardboard. Please email me at paige312@cebridge.net to inquire about my artwork.

Bar Scene - oil pastel figurative

I had to do this drawing practically in the dark and very quickly, too. It was hard to see exactly what colors I was using, so I just relied on value.

There was just something about the jesture of this pose that attracted me. Of course, they didn't keep it for long. I LOVE drawing people when they are just being themselves and aren't "posed".

This oil pastel is 9" x 9" on Strathmore 403 paper.

It is matted in a professionally cut acid-free board, 11" x 14", ready to be framed behind glass.

Sweet Nothings - figurative oil on board - 7" x 5"

No matter how I tried to paint her, this woman just insisted on whispering in her partner's ear. Sometimes my characters have minds of their own and are simply beyond my control. Oh well. Oil on board, 7" x 5".

Another Red Dress - figurative oil on panel - 7"x 5"

I loved doing this one - this couple had such emotion, as well as being really good dancers. I didn't sand the last gesso coat on this and it's more textured than I usually do, so I enjoyed working on this surface for a change of pace.

Red Dress - figurative mixed media - dancers

Here's another of my watercolor crayon/oil pastels on black Stonehenge paper. It's approximately 5" x 3 1/2".
This couple did a mix of Argentinian tango and a newer version. They were interesting to watch.

This one is watercolor crayon with touches of Sennelier oil pastel on black Stonehenge paper - 5" x 3 1/2", with a 1/2" border around the drawing. Signed on the bottom.

Daydreamer

I just love it when a person (in this case, a young girl in the library) just relaxes into a pose and I have time to draw without having to take a photo to work from later. This drawing was done from a charcoal sketch in oil pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes.

If you are near Kerrville, Texas, please visit the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center, 228 Earl Garrett, to see the Kerrville Art Club Annual Juried Membership Show. It's a beautiful exhibit of the work of many talented artists in the area. I was very lucky to win First Prize in Pastel and Colored Pencil with my oil pastel "Little Yellow Dress", and an Honorable Mention in Graphics for "Three Gestures".

Sheila

This little drawing is oil pastel on Mi-Tientes - the textured side - which few people seem to like for portraits or figures, but I love it!

Another Geisha

Geishas are among my favorite subjects. Although I will probably do a larger, more finished piece based on this drawing, I sometimes find that a painting loses some of the life and looseness found in the drawing. This is oil pastel on Strathmore 403.
Five of my works - all of which have been featured on my blog - are in the annual juried membership show of the Kerrville Art Club at the Kerr Arts and Cultural Center in Kerrville, Texas. If you're in the area, please drop by and see our show.

1950s

I'm away from home and studio and likely to stay that way for a few days due to an ice storm. This is when old movies on TV come in. I watched a rock and roll movie from the 50s - not memorable, but some of the characters were fun to draw. This guy was a guitarist in one of the bands that played a song in the movie. I loved the outfit he wore; the jacket had a design, but I had to draw quickly, so just got the overall color. Oil pastel on Strathmore 403.

Rehearsal

I am away from home and don't have many art supplies with me, but I was lucky to be able to watch some flamenco dancers rehearsing today, so I did this little drawing with vine charcoal on vellum Bristol. 12"x9".
