I did this nude study on a piece of 7 x 5" hardboard that I gessoed with a bristle brush and never did sand it to make it smoother. And I had fun with it - it's almost a canvas-looking surface. There's just something that is so appealing - to me, at least, of a nude who is looking away from the viewer. I guess that's why I do so many of them, but maybe this is the biggest reason: Where I'm sitting in the room always seems to be sort of behind the model. Works pretty well for me.
